Hannah teaches trad; Summer 2022
Traditional ‘sean-nós’ or ‘in the old way.’ The term describes a genre of solo singing in the Irish language, in which the words and music are of equal importance. Songs in this style were composed to accompany work, inside and outside the house, to express feelings, and to commit to memory local events important to the community.
The course is divided into 10 units. There are seven songs on the curriculum of this course, most of which are from the west Muskerry Gaeltacht in County Cork. Each unit contains an introduction, a section dealing with phonetics, and sections that examine and explain the metres of each verse. There is also an additional section containing supplementary reading material. At the end of the course, students will be very familiar with the sean-nós genre and will be comfortable singing this style any of the songs covered in the course.
